The Panasonic 3DO was one of the first 32-bit video game consoles. Launched back in October 1993, the 3DO featured a 12.5 MHz RISC CPU; two video co-processors; 16-bit stereo sound; and a 2X CD-ROM drive. Much more powerful than the popular video game systems of its day, the Sega Genesis and Nintendo SNES, the 3DO was marketed as the most advanced home gaming system in the universe. It originally sold for a whopping $699.95 and was bundled with Crystal Dynamics’ combat racing game Crash ‘n Burn.

Not-so-surprisingly, the 3DO didn’t have much commercial success. The high price tag, limited software library, and the impending releases of the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn had gamers spending their time and money elsewhere. At the end of 1996, the 3DO system was discontinued.

Although the Panasonic 3DO was a commercial failure, it still offers a small library of titles that are worth playing. Killing Time and Space Hulk, two early first-person shooters, are heavy on atmosphere and exploration. The PC ports of Alone in the Dark and Cyberia look sharp and control well with the 3DO controllers. Bust-a-Move, Lemmings, and Trip’d are fun puzzle games with solid gameplay that still hold up to this day. For arcade junkies, the FMV classic Dragon’s Lair, one-on-one fighter Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and rail shooter StarBlade are must-haves. And lastly, there’s Return Fire. This simple, yet fun, capture the flag game successfully blends action and strategy with some tongue-in-cheek humor.

The much anticipated Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray box set was released today. Star Wars: Jedi Arena was a one or two-player game that used the 2600 paddle controllers. Playing as a Jedi, players used the paddles to swat away lightning bolts that were shot from a training drone. Think of this game as a poor man’s Warlords.

Return of the Jedi: Death Star Battle had two phases of gameplay. In the first scene, players flew the Millennium Falcon around space shooting Imperial fighters while waiting for a hole to appear in the Death Star’s multi-colored energy shield. If a player was able to fly the Falcon through the hole, they’d be taken to a second scene where they had to blast away at the Death Star.

JVC’s Star Wars game for the original NES was a side-scroller that was loosely based on the first film. With multiple characters, various level locales, and lots of combat, this underrated game presents a nice challenge for those die-hard action gamers. An updated version called Super Star Wars was released for the SNES.

Star Wars Arcade for the Sega 32X is essentially a souped-up version of the old Atari Star Wars arcade game. In this shooter, gamers could pilot an X-Wing or Y-Wing through an asteroid field and along the surface of the Death Star as they took on TIE Fighters, turrets, and Super Star Destroyers. The presentation in Star Wars Arcade is particularly nice with its well-done polygon graphics, voice acting, and cinematic score.
