Bonk’s Adventure was the TurboGrafx-16’s first big
platformer. Simply put, it kicked Keith Courage’s ass. Bonk’s Adventure was
oozing with charm – and it was fun. The game featured a goofy, head-butting
caveman who beat enemies with his bald head. The graphics were bright and
colorful, the music was upbeat, and there were lots of secrets to find and
Smileys to collect. But the sequel to Bonk’s Adventure, Bonk’s Revenge, is far
superior in every way.
A simple look at some Bonk’s Revenge screenshots
says it all. The game is bigger, brighter, and bolder; the environments are
multi-layered and teeming with life. There are enemies everywhere and they’re
not just slowly pacing. Some of them are relaxing, fishing, or napping while
others are on the hunt, looking to hit Bonk with a snowball or a pickax.
Speaking of Bonk, he has some new powers in this game. If he eats a small meat,
he’ll gain a more powerful head-butt and the ability to freeze enemies. But, if
Bonk eats a large meat, he’ll transform in to a powerful, fire-breathing
butthead! Bonk can even transform into a crab, enabling him to crawl through
some tight spaces.
Bonk’s Revenge also features some excellent sounds and
music. Bonk’s head-butts sound loud and satisfying while the background tunes
are bouncy and quite catchy. Just listen to the Piranha
River stage music to see what we mean.
While Bonk’s Revenge can be beaten in just a few hours, you’re
bound to play it again and again. After all, the game is lots of fun and it has
so many secrets that you’re bound to miss some of them the first time through. If
you own a TurboGrafx-16 or TurboDuo, then you
really should pick up a copy of Bonk’s Revenge, especially if you enjoy old
school 2D platform video games.
