Next Generation Magazine Back Issues

Next Generation was a bit different than the other video game periodicals of its day. Based on the British gaming magazine Edge, Next Generation covered the entire landscape of gaming from arcades to consoles to PCs. Just by looking at an issue of Next Generation sitting on the rack, one could tell that it was different than the likes of Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro. It was printed on a wider, heavier paper that made it feel substantial. The content inside Next Generation backed up that sentiment as it focused on industry news and straight-to-the-point game reviews. The layout was clean and focused, unlike Die Hard Game Fan. Another unusual aspect of Next Generation was the fact that it ran job advertisements for industry heavyweights like Konami and Squaresoft. Next Generation was a must-read for me as I wasn’t just interested in playing and collecting games, but I also aspired to work in the video game business.

Right now, I have a few back issues of Next Generation up for auction on eBay. Anyone who’s a classic gamer should pick up one of these mags just to see what was going on at the time. A couple of highlights include an interview with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto in Issue 02 and a look at Sony’s Net Yaroze in Issue 25.
